Cutaway of journalists 5. Wide shot of briefing STORYLINE: China said on Tuesday that a new round of six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear programme will be held in Beijing on June 23-26. Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue announced the dates at a regular news briefing in Beijing. Lower-level meetings will be held next Monday and Tuesday to set the agenda for the talks, Zhang said. But North Korea warned that no progress will be made at next week's talks if the United States stands by its position on resolving a standoff over the communist North's nuclear programs. A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said "nothing will be expected" from the talks if Washington insists on a "complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling," or CVID, of North Korea's nuclear weapons facilities. North Korea has said it is willing to freeze its nuclear program in return for economic aid. It insists it will only dismantle its nuclear facilities if the United States also provides security guarantees that it will not invade the isolated communist state. Zhang expressed China's hope the all participants would exhibit "their utmost sincerity and flexibility for cooperation...so as to make headway in the third round of talks". The six-party talks were convened under the stewardship of Beijing to address the standoff sparked in October 2002 when Washington said North Korea admitted operating a nuclear programme in violation of a 1994 agreement. They involve the two Koreas, China, the United States, Japan and Russia. Two previous rounds of discussions ended without settlement. The contentious issue of whether or not North Korea has a secret uranium-based project would be discussed, Zhang continued. North Korea denies U-S claims that Pakistan provided it with uranium enrichment technology. It has said it has only one nuclear weapons programme based on plutonium.
