重要伝統的建造物群保存地区/会津西街道/福島県南会津郡 ____________________________________________________ Ouchi-juku is a former post station on the Aizu West Highway in Minamiaizu-gun, Fukushima Prefecture. During the Edo period (1603-1867), it flourished as an important post town connecting Aizu-Wakamatsu City and Nikko Imaichi. With the opening of the railroad, the post town has declined, but the village with thatched roof houses has been handed down as a tourist attraction to this day. Ouchi-juku is located in the mountains of Minamiaizu at an elevation of 650 m, surrounded by the 1,000 m mountains of the Ou Mountains. Along the 450-meter-long old highway, there are many thatched-roof private residences, souvenir shops, and soba noodle shops. The soba noodles, in particular, are known as "Takato soba," and there is an unusual custom of eating soba noodles with green onions instead of chopsticks. Ouchi-juku has a climate on the Sea of Japan side, with hot summers and heavy snowfalls in winter due to the foehn phenomenon. In 1981, it was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and has become one of Fukushima's representative tourist destinations. The local residents have established a charter and are working to preserve the landscape and acquire and pass on traditional roofing techniques by adhering to the three principles of "do not sell, do not rent, and do not destroy" the valuable houses.
