Why Community in Gilgit-Baltistan Are Building Ice Stupas | WWF-Pakistan

In the remote Pari Village, District Kharmang of Gilgit -Baltistan, seasonal water scarcity has long affected local agriculture. During the winter months and up until May, glacier meltwater does not reach the valley, leaving farmers without sufficient irrigation water for their crops and fruit orchards. This shortage directly impacts agricultural productivity and livelihoods in the region. To address this challenge, WWF-Pakistan, with the support of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), introduced a climate-adaptive solution. Ice stupas were constructed and water pipelines installed to store winter water and gradually release it during the early growing season.
