If you’re spending time training around Fitness Street in Phuket, chances are your days are packed with Muay Thai rounds, brutal CrossFit WODs, and the occasional ice bath while questioning your life choices. But if you want to switch it up and still get a solid workout in, the Big Buddha hike is a seriously good option. The hike starts near Chalong and it’s all paved roads, but don’t get too comfortable - it’s a steady uphill battle the whole way. You’ll climb around 300 vertical meters (roughly 1,000 feet) over the course of about 6 kilometers. For the average person, it’ll take about an hour, depending on how many times you stop to "take in the view" (or pretend you're admiring nature when really you're just gasping for air). It’s what I’d call a "medium difficulty" hike - challenging enough to make your legs and lungs work, but completely manageable if you've been putting in sessions at the gyms down on Fitness Street. At the summit, you’re greeted by the Big Buddha itself - a 45-meter (148-foot) tall statue officially named Phra Phuttha Mingmongkhon Akenakkiri. It’s made of beautiful white Burmese marble and gleams in the sunlight, standing watch over Chalong Bay and southern Phuket. Construction began in 2004 and while it’s technically still ongoing in some parts, the statue itself has long since become one of Phuket’s most iconic landmarks - a symbol of calmness, faith, and resilience. Buddhism is woven deeply into daily life here in Thailand. Around 95% of the population practice Theravāda Buddhism, a tradition that emphasizes self-discipline, mindfulness, and compassion. You can feel it everywhere - from the countless temples to the way strangers treat each other in the street. Climbing up to the Big Buddha feels like tapping into that side of Thai culture too, even if your real motivation was just “something different to do between training sessions.” And honestly, that's part of the magic - combining fitness, culture, and a bit of suffering into one sweaty, rewarding morning. If you’re here putting in the work on Fitness Street, don’t miss it. It’s a great reminder that fitness doesn’t always have to be barbells and beating the hell out of pads. Sometimes it’s just grinding up a sun-baked hill, one step at a time — and appreciating where your legs (and stubbornness) can take you. And hey, the view at the top? Makes it all worth it. #FitnessStreet #FitnessStreetphuket #Phuket #BigBuddha #FitnessStreet #MuayThai #CrossFit #ThailandTravel #TrainingInThailand #HybridAthlete #adventuretravel #solotravel #hyrox #crossfit #military =================================== Your daily dose of life: / resurgent_harry / resurgent_harry https://linktr.ee/resurgent_harry
