When I was about 25 years old I had recently graduated from college and I was spending a lot of time with a group of friends who were screenwriters, videographers, digital artists, etc. For fun we would challenge each other with "I bet you can't...", and whoever lost the bet bought the beer and pizza. One of the challenges directed at me was, "I bet you can't write a symphony". This piece was my answer to that challenge. Luckily for me, I studied music in college and I even took courses on composition, arranging, and orchestration. That's not to say the challenge was easy, but it did give me a competitive advantage, for sure. Back when I originally wrote the piece, I had very limited options for orchestral sounds. I had a couple of "orchestral" synthesizers, but at that time, the sound was inflexibile and inconsistent. So while I did meet the challenge, I never ended up recording the piece because I wasn't satisfied with the quality of the orchestral sounds. Fast forward to 2021 and I got access to the free version of #SpitfireAudio "BBC Symphony Orchestra". The quality of this sample library is just stunning, especially considering the capabilities of this free version. One of the huge differences between the old orchestral synthesizers and these new sample libraries are the included instrument articulations. For example, for the violin section, beyond just quiet vs loud I can specify things like long sustained articulation, staccato, pizzicato, etc., all from the same violin section sample set. While yes, it's still pretty obviously a "fake orchestra", the level of realism is infinitely better than the old synths. I also used the Logic Pro "Studio Strings" virtual string section blended with the BBC Symphony Orchestra strings, as I found that the Logic Pro strings have a little faster attack and a few extra articulation types available. The sound quality of the BBC SO strings is quite a bit better though. ========== GEAR USED IN THIS VIDEO Spitfire Audio BBC Symphony Orchestra https://www.spitfireaudio.com / spitfireaudio / @spitfireaudiollp ========== MY MUSIC Apple Music / iTunes / chris-stark Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/5kJ9M...
