The Fender startocaster is one of the most successful and iconic electric guitars ever made. It is strongly attached to the history of rock, blues and pop music. It is just impossible to measure how much it has impacted our collective memory and imagination. Its design is well thought but relatively simple and hasn’t changed much since the 50’s or the 60’s, depending on what kinda of wood and profile you like for you neck. So basically, mostly the way it’s manufactured has changed over the years. However an interesting aspect of being such a mass production instrument with a simple design is that you can find a lot of spare parts and ways to customise your guitar on your own. Many brands out of Fender manufacture spare parts, and making up your mind on what pickups or what pickguard color, or what bridge you need is fun but can become a nightmare for the new comers. I only started to play a Fender Stratocaster like 3 years ago. But I quickly fell in the rabbit hole of wanting to nail the perfect strat tone “to my ears” and strat look “to my eyes”. And as I started this stratocaster quest, which I never had with any other of my guitars, changing the pickups and pickguard were obviously on top of my list. And it’s safe to assume that those modifications are the 2 most common ways of personalising or improving your strat to your likings. But as I was considering swapping the classic 3 layer polyester pickguard nearly every strat comes with for a golden anodized aluminium pick guard I was reading on some forums that the aluminium pickguard was affecting the tone and the sustain of the guitar. That’s basically how I decided to make this video. I just wanted to document it. So what was my process? On day 1 I put new strings on my guitar and recorded 5 different musical ideas, one for each pickup position. Then on day 2 I installed the aluminium pickguard. But I kept the same strings and same amp settings. In case you’d like to know, my strat is a second hand 2002 Highway One Strat equipped with Bare Knuckles True grit. The amp I used is a EVH 5150III LBX. It is a 15W amp with 2 EL84 power tubes and it can produces some great tones, including some nearly clean guitar tones if you’re willing to play with your volume knob. I also used a Two Notes Captor X to capture the sound of the 5150 directly into my soundcard. I didn’t do any EQing in Logic Pro X, but I added a tiny bit of “Mountain Chapel” reverb. -----------(( Who am I? ))---------- Hi there, My name is Ulrich Schadeck. I'm a rock artist from Belgium.
