What is the US Electoral College & how does it play a part in the US Presidential election? To help explain this unique system works, we take a look at a controversial 3rd party candidate. Kanye recently announced on Twitter he’s going to run in the November elections against Republican President Donald Trump & Democrat Nominee Joe Biden. So, does Kanye have a chance of winning? It’s not looking good so far. He’s already missed the deadline to register to be on the ballot in a bunch of states. Even if he had registered, he’s in for a big uphill battle because he’s not the Democrat or Republican nominee. They’re the US’ two big political parties and if you don’t belong to them you don’t have much of a chance. Since this guy was elected all the way back in 1860 it’s been pretty much a two horse race. Since Lincoln there have been just a handful of outsiders that have picked up a decent amount of votes, and none came close to winning. You might be thinking: isn’t Kanye just like Trump in 2015? He’s a celebrity with next to no experience in politics. The difference is Trump was elected as the nominee for the Republican party while Kanye is just running on his own. That means Kanye has to compete with 2 massive political organisations. Both with tens of millions of members across the country… That managed to raise more than a billion dollars each at the last election. This is a nightmare for smaller political parties to compete with, let alone a single bloke that’s not even a politician. So, why is it so hard for anyone that isn’t a Democrat or Republican to win? The US Electoral College. This is the system that the US uses to decide it’s major elections. Basically, it doesn’t matter who gets the most votes overall, it matters who gets the most electoral votes… which you can get by winning a state. One of the biggest criticisms of the electoral college, is that it’s winner takes all in almost every state. For example, if a Democrat wins 50.1% of the vote in California, and a Republican wins 49.9%, the Democrat gets 55 electoral votes and the Republican gets 0. Even if you get a bunch of votes in every state you have to win states to stand a chance to become President. So, why is Kanye even bothering with 2020 and why is he running against Donald Trump, someone he’s been a vocal supporter of in the past? There are a couple of different theories. #1. He genuinely believes he can win. Kanye isn’t short on confidence, and if he truly believes he can win, good for him. #2. He’s using this run to send a message. Even if 3rd party candidates never win, if they do get enough votes it can send a message to the main parties that their ideas are popular. At the moment it’s not clear what Kanye’s ideas are, and some suspect he’s just doing this to promote his new album. #3. Kanye is trying to take votes away from the current candidates. The idea is people that would have been voting for Donald Trump or Joe Biden will vote for Kanye instead. In the past there have been examples of third party candidates having a big impact on the outcome of the election even without having to win many votes themselves. For example, in the 2000 election, Democrat Al Gore lost in Florida by just 537 votes. Ralph Nader from the Greens party scored 97,421 votes and polling data and a study in 2006 show it’s likely the majority of those Nader votes would’ve gone to Al Gore instead of George Bush. Meaning a Democrat win in Florida and a Democrat win overall. So, would Kanye’s run be more likely to hurt Biden or Trump? Studies show that most of his fans are more likely to be Democrats… So, he’d be taking more supporters away from the Democrats if they decided to vote for him and that this is why he’s running against someone he’s been so supportive of these past few years. The counterargument is Trump supporters are more likely to vote for him because he’s a Trump supporter. Now, it’s very important to say this is a pretty cynical view to think Kanye is doing all of this just to steal votes. It’s also impossible to prove. But one thing we do know Is that if Kanye goes through with this and actually decides to run, we’ll be seeing his face a lot more on the news and hopefully he uses that platform to talk about what he believes in and not to tell people to buy his album. __________________________________________ For the past 50 years, Behind the News has been helping to break down current issues and events for young people all around the world.
