by John Madewell The hardest hit town in our viewing area was Murphy, North Carolina.Residents there are facing water and sewer outages because of flooding and landslides. The rushing Valley River caused most of these problems. And they are serious ones, especially for businesses east of the Bulldog Drive bridge collapse. The Valley River carved its own path under the Bulldog Drive bridge.About 16 feet of the road collapsed into the raging river. In the past, onlooker Ray Seabolt built bridges himself. He knows the tough job ahead. There's no easy way to do it, you know.Seabolt's correct.During the interview, part of the road collapsed into the river.A closer look revealed the chunk was the width of an entire lane.Debris from last March's tornado washed up, lodged on the bridge and forced the water to the edges. That ferocity caused even worse problems on the other side.First, the main sewer line washed away. Then, early this morning, the pressure and landslide ruptured the 16 inch water main. Mayor Bill Hughes said, The east side of town has been almost completely cut off as far as infrastructural services are concerned.Mayor Hughes went on to say all of the businesses east of the bridge remain without sewer and some are without water. The city has another main line running parallel to the ruptured one. It wasn't damaged. But Murphy High School is without water or sewer.Principal Boyd Shields said certain steps had to be followed. First of all, before we did any of this we had to get clearance and contacts from the health department, the Cherokee County Health Department, and found out what stipulations and guidelines were involved, Shields said.Drinking water, port-o-lets, a hand washing station, hand sanitizers and bagged lunches prepared at another school have all been brought to the students and faculty of Murphy High.Mayor Hughes is aware of what Murphy residents and businesses are going through. We're working hard now to try to restore them, but until the water recedes we're not going to be able to do much. Here's why.Crews lowered a concret barrier wall into the Valley River at the fallen bank. They were trying to isolate the ruptured water main. The first two walls lowered in slipped down into the powerful current. And early this morning, a sewer by-pass plan literally washed away.Mayor Hughes explained, It was right there and we were going to pump directly into it, but just as we were starting to do so, the manhole, in its entirety, washed directly into the river. That's the type of problems Murphy faces right now. Mayor Hughes said water repairs will start tomorrow. Sewer repairs are expected to take longer. One final note: residents on the Murphy water system are advised to boil all drinking water until further notice.
