Who was Invidia? What was her contaminating power and what did it have to do with seeing and vision? In this episode, we explore the thought-worlds of envy and the ancient Roman Evil Eye. We discover Invidia in the domestic context and find out how she affected decoration and design. We see how Invidia characterised Roman culture more broadly in this way: fear of the Evil Eye affected everything from behaviour to decor. Along the way, we encounter Nemesis, the goddess of revenge and retribution. We also meet some of famous characters from myth and shine a new light on them: Medusa and Narcissus are both inextricably bound up in ideas about dangerous gazes. We glimpse Priapus and the world of phallic apotropaism and find even the Vestal Virgins getting involved. *** This is the ninth in an ancient history series that explores Roman religion behind the veil of Greek mythology. Each episode focuses on a different indigenous Roman god. The episodes follow on from one another and are building a bigger picture for those who are along for the ride but they are designed also to stand alone, so feel free to dip in and out. Our task is to recover Rome's lesser-known deities from obscurity and, ultimately, to better understand the religion that fuelled an empire. Welcome to the Shadows of Olympus!
