His ancestors had left Kashmir to settle in Batala. He holds a master’s degree in commerce from the Hailey College of Commerce, Punjab University, Lahore. A self-described liberal and secularist, Butt recalls a time when he admired Indian music and culture. He says that for Pakistani liberals, India used to be a source of intellectual and cultural inspiration. But according to him, that era ended four decades ago.
