Unit 6- Traditional Hierarchy of Genres: Naturalistic subject matter overview- lecture

For this unit you will expand and explore your understanding of traditional methods of representation in painting. The traditional hierarchy of genres in painting has to do with subject matter, 'history paintings' and 'portraits' were considered the most intellectually challenging and exalted subjects and hence were at the top of the hierarchy. At the bottom of the hierarchy were genres like the 'still life' and 'animal portraits/painting'. I use this to organize these subjects, each subject has a group of projects to choose from. You can progress sequentially from easiest to hardest or skip around. All the while please keep your work highly representational, naturalistic, traditional, and realistic. I will explain all in this lecture. I will also introduce but not explain each project in detail. That is on you to check out the project you wish to tackle, there will be links below after each time link.
