Marcia was an active and sporting single mum in her mid-40s when she started to be troubled with what she was being told were purely gynaecological problems. Her symptoms spiralled alarmingly, yet a proper diagnosis eluded her. It was only the intervention of her sister, Maureen, a nurse, that led to the overwhelming diagnosis of a triple whammy of dilated cardiomyopathy, heart failure and mitral regurgitation. Fortunately, she came under the care of Prof. Carr-White, who worked with her on a treatment plan. He also put her in contact with the patient group, Cardiomyopathy UK, which she describes as her "lifeline". She found a community of people who understood what she was going through. Moreover, she is giving back by sharing her experiences and wise counsel with new patients as a Change Maker for Cardiomyopathy UK. Marcia is also an advocate for Global Heart Hub, the international alliance for those living with and affected by cardiovascular disease, who are our partners for this episode.
