In the 2nd episode of The Pioneering Patient Podcast, Michael George of Sagesse Healthcare, talks to 28-year old doctor and diabetes patient advocate, Konstantina Boumaki. Konstantina, who comes from Crete in Greece, was diagnosed at the age of 9 when her parents' friends convinced them to take her to be checked. Her paediatric diabetologist encouraged her to be both a patient advocate - even though there was no word for "advocacy" in Greek - and to follow a career in medicine. As her mentor and role-model - along with her family - set her on the path to being an internationally recognised patient advocate. In this area, she campaigns avidly for equity of access to diagnosis and treatment for diabetes patients wherever they live in the world. In this episode, she also offers excellent advice to patients. As she explains, "diabetes life is hard" as 42 things outside of your control can affect your blood glucose, but she also offers reassurance based on her own experiences.
