Glossy Black-Cockatoos are a threatened species you can help to survive. Glossy Blacks are fussy eaters and will ONLY eat the seeds from she-oak /casuarina trees, especially Allocasuarina littoralis (Black she-oak). If you plant Allocasuarina littoralis in your garden you will help this beautiful bird to survive. Other birds such as Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos, Sulphur Crested Cockies, Gang Gangs, Rainbow Lorikeets & many more have adapted very well to eating a wide range of plants, flowers & seeds including many foreign plants that have been introduced to Australian gardens over the last 240 years. BUT NOT the Glossy blacks -they exclusively feed on she-oaks and without these trees, these birds will starve to death. Glossy Black-Cockatoos occur mainly in eastern Australia, from east Queensland, through NSW to eastern Victoria. There was also a group on Kangaroo Island in South Australia, however, most of these birds died following terrible bushfires on Kangaroo Island in recent years. Don Burke has planted many Allocasuarina littoralis trees in his garden over the last 40 years and the Glossy Blacks are regularly in his garden feasting and raising their young. Note: Glossy blacks only have one baby every 1-2 years. Do your bit and plant Allocasuarina littoralis, which is available at most native plant nurseries or your local nursery should be able to order some for you.
