Whitening your teeth is a simple, relatively quick and affordable procedure to improve the look of your teeth. In terms of the procedure, there is more than one way of doing it. In this video, I compare in office whitening and take home tooth whitening. The first major difference is where they are done - in office is at the dentist, and take home is at home. In office whitening uses bleach directly on your teeth, and it happens very quickly. Take home whitening uses bleach that is loaded into some custom trays, that are left in place for between 30mins and 8hrs, and can take about 1-2 weeks to get results. At the end of the day, they both produce the same results, but often the in office whitening needs to be supplemented with take home whitening anyway. One negative to in office whitening is that part of the whitening effect is due to the dehydration of the teeth during the appointment. This can mean that the colour is not as white the next day, when the teeth get their hydration back. Because a higher percentage of gel is used for in office whitening, there is a greater chance of sensitivity. Because of this, I don't recommend patients who have sensitivity, to do in office whitening. You can still get sensitivity from take home whitening, but it is much less likely. Because there is less of the dentist's time and equipment required for take home whitening, it has a lower cost, and it is more cost-effective in the long-term, as you can simply purhcase new gel and use your old trays in the future when you want a top up. The last point is that with take home whitening you are in control over the final outcome because you can stop when you want to. With in chair whitening, results are a little less predictable.
