Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Over the Rainbow (CPP/Belwin) (from "The Wizard of Oz") — E. Y. Harburg/Harold Arlen, arr. Douglas E. Wagner So much of "The Wizard of Oz" is in the play within a play, that it is easy to forget that the whole story arch is really about the main characters maturing so that they can better handle the stresses of their daily lives. The farm hands learn of their inner resources of intelligence, courage, and emotional depth, while Dorothy unearths the strength of character necessary to deal with her overbearing elderly neighbor. The flight of fancy wasn’t so much an escape as a training ground. Perhaps our reflections on this music can function in the same way for us this afternoon.
