What is Somatic Symptom Disorder and what can we do if we have it? Somatic Symptom Disorder is a mental health issue in which the person experiences physical symptoms that are not due to a medical diagnosis. The symptoms are such that they lead to a lot of worry and anxiety for the person who often uproots areas of their life to compensate for the symptoms. Physical symptoms can range from mild to severe and be very specific or general in nature. The combination of a medical doctor, psychiatrist and therapist along with support from family and friends is recommended for dealing with Somatic Symptom Disorder. Treatment should help the person more effectively manage persistent worries and anxieties that can intensify physical symptoms because of the mind/body connection. IMPORTANT NOTE: A person who does NOT experience physical symptoms or if the symptoms are very minor, is more likely to be diagnosed with Illness Anxiety Disorder, often known as "Hypochondria."
