Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op.70 (2018-19) – I. Moderato – Composer: Geert Van Hoorick - Digital performance using Sibelius 6 and Garritan Personal Orchestra - Feel free to comment. For the most recent version of the score see http://www.scoreexchange.com/scores/3... and http://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Van_Ho... (where the sheet music is for free). The Symphony No. 2 is neo-romantic, pastoral and rather introvert. It is composed in the late romantic tradition, and is scored for a normal sized symphonic orchestra. It consists of four movements. The 1st one is a pastoral and moderately fast movement in sonata form, based on two related themes, in which a short fanfare plays also an important role. The exposition and reprise are largely in the Dorian mode, except from the short introduction in D major. The development section starts around 3’30”, the recapitulation starts around 7’00”. The 2nd one is a vigorous scherzo in D minor (in which the timpani and other percussion instruments play a major role) with a fairylike trio, that starts around 2’30”. The 3rd movement is a slow and moving cantilena in which the cello solo plays an important role, immediately expositing the singing main theme in B flat minor, that is then further developed. The 4th one (or finale) is again a pastoral and moderately fast movement in sonata form, based on two themes; in de 2nd one a (longer) fanfare is dominant. The development section starts around 2’10”, the reprise starts around 4’10”. After the fanfare rings for the last time, a solemn coda in D major concludes the symphony. Digital performance using Sibelius 6 and Garritan Personal Orchestra.
