A presentation by Joseph Fletcher, PhD and Matthew Conolly, MD given on April 8, 1987 at Loma Linda University. Dr. Fletcher begins with a reflection on what it means to make loving decisions for geriatric patients and the right to die. He goes on to claim there is no moral difference between allowing a patient to die and actively assisting in their death (assuming the patient desires death). He finally asks what good comes from forcing a patient to continue breathing against their will. Dr. Conolly begins his presentation by claiming euthanasia is a slippery slope that brings more complications than solutions. He also argues that patients may change their minds, families may need time to cope, and euthanasia may slow research projects, among other objections. He offers a total of eleven critiques and ends with a discussion of the current state of hospice care.
