Former dean of students at LAU, Dr. Tarek Na'was takes us into his lab where we learn the fascinating tale of bacteria: their language, their bi-lingual abilities, and even their inability to maintain strong relationship ties sometimes. Sounds familiar? Then take the tour! These talks were recorded at the Lebanese American University in Beirut on September 29, 2012 as part of the first independently organized live TEDxLAU event under the theme of "Unleash Your Passions". About the speaker: Associate professor of biology/pharmacy, He previously served as the Dean of Students at LAU's Beirut campus (1998--2010). He was elected as chair of the LAU Faculty Senate and Vice President of the "Association of Universities of Lebanon." Dr. Na'was earned his Ph.D. in Basic Medical Sciences from the School of Medicine of the American University of Beirut in 1983 and underwent postdoctoral training in the Special Bacteriology Laboratory of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in 1985.He served as an assistant professor at the Yarmouk University (1983--1987) and then the Jordan University for Science and Technology (1987--1988), where he was promoted to associate professor and later appointed Chair of the Allied Health Sciences Department of the School of Medicine (1989--1991). Dr. Na'was was granted the "Shouman Award" for Young Arab Scientists in the field of Basic Medical Sciences in 1993 and the Fulbright Research Grant in 1994.
