In this episode, Cooley and I will show you a gentle, suppling warm-up pattern that combines all the lateral walk movements you have learned up to this point. Watch and you will find answers to the following questions: 1. How can I gently warm up and supple my horse in the walk? 2. Which pattern can I use to warm up my horse in the walk? 3. What are some of the benefits of preparing my horse with a lateral walk warm-up? I’d like to encourage you to learn and practice all of the lateral movements — leg yield, shoulder-in, haunches-in (travers/renvers) and half-pass — in the walk before progressing with them in the trot and canter. This exercise pattern will help you to manage and master all of the detailed ‘micro-aids' needed for the lateral movements with growing precision and better timing. Plus, I think you may appreciate this effective alternative to the usual posting trot warm-up routine as it will help you conserve your horse’s aerobic energy for other parts you may want to work on during the working phase of your sessions. In my videos, I share tips and pointers with people interested in expanding their knowledge about foundational Dressage and different types of groundwork. You will see me work with horses of various breeds, levels and backgrounds, highlighting parts of the journey we call work-in-progress with our equine partners.
