We’re on the road again at Washakum Live Steamers in Holliston, Massachusetts for their 2025 Summer Meet. This public event is a favorite stop, but something new is happening in the hobby. The live steam world is shifting—steam locomotives are still admired and cherished, but more and more backyard railroaders are turning to electric and small gas-powered locomotives. The reasons are simple: cost, practicality, and the reality that full-size railroads today are almost entirely diesel. In this video, you’ll see everything from decades-old steamers to brand-new homebuilt electrics, along with the smiles that make this hobby what it is. Whether you’re into the history, the craftsmanship, or just the joy of riding the rails, come along for a look at the Washakum track and the people who keep it alive. Now, if you're new here, Waushakum Live Steamers is one of the oldest miniature railroad clubs in America. A decade ago, the scene would have been different. Mostly steam power on the track with a strong gas-hydrostatic presence and a few tiny electric locos. Today, we have a couple steam engines, a handful of gas-hydrostatic locos and an equal amount of electrics running around the track.
