Located along the north coast of the Isle of Wight, which is separated from the south coast of mainland England by the Solent Strait, is the town of Ryde. For most of its history, Ryde was a small fishing village. During the 14th century it was destroyed by French raiders. It was the 19th century which saw rapid transformation, as the two villages of Upper Ryde and Lower Ryde were merged into one seaside resort. In 1812 the Ryde Pier Act was passed, and by 1814 the pier opened. Prior to this, visitors were known to have walked up to half a mile across wet sand before reaching the town. The initial structure was made entirely from timber, and measured around 1,740 feet in length, or 530 metres, allowing ferries to berth even at low tide. It was extended in 1824, and again in 1842, at which point it reached its present-day length of around 2,230 feet, or 680 metres. In 1825 Ryde's first steam boat service began in earnest. By 1831 Queen Victoria, while still a princess, made her first visit to the Isle of Wight. This ushered in a period of growth for the entire island as a fashionable retreat. During the 1850s, Ryde Esplanade was laid out, and by the following decade, the railways had arrived. Ryde's first railway station opened in 1864. This was renamed from Ryde to Ryde St John's Road in 1880 in order to distinguish it from two other stations that opened during that same year. These were Ryde Esplanade and Ryde Pier Head. All three stations remain open today (with the possible exception of Ryde Pier Head, depending on the date you're reading this! It is scheduled to reopen in May of 2025 following maintenance work), and form part of the Island Line, which runs down the east coast as far south as Shanklin. Trains on the line consist of repurposed London Underground stock; one of which features in the video. In 1965 the first hovercraft services to Ryde commenced. This was initially intended as a seasonal summer service, but ended up as a regular means of transport between the island and the mainland to this day. It links Ryde to the Southsea area of Portsmouth with multiple daily crossings, each taking around 10 minutes. Alternatively, a ferry service between Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde Pier Head is available. Famous people from Ryde include film director Anthony Minghella. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
