In this video I’m teaming June and Utah for the first time. June has been a part of 4 different Liberty teams of either 2 or 3 horses. She is confident with the ask but is a little unsure of her place with this new horse. Utah has never been a part of the team and you can see him try to understand what to do with another horse in the round pen with us. Utah has a very strong connection and bond with me which makes it hard for him to share. He has to learn to work alongside June and that it doesn’t damage our relationship as a pair. A couple things to note, this session gives me a lot of insight into what my horses need to make a good pair. This context will help me go through certain steps more thoroughly and ensure that future sessions are well planned out and effective. What I noticed through this session with them was that Utah is resistant to June pushing into him. To remedy this I’ll work a lot on side passing and lateral movements as a team, rewarding when they’re working nicely with a small bubble (space) between them. Another thing to note is that Utah wasn’t confident about where he is meant to be in relationship to June on a circle. I’ll work a lot more with June on the halter and Utah at liberty to to reinforce where he’s meant to be, I’ll make sure this is solid in the walk and trot before taking the lead off again. June is also a little confused about which side she is supposed to be on with Utah. She has been teamed with another horse on her left but is much more accustomed to August on her right. Putting Utah in the halter and doing the same exercise will help build her confidence. This will also help Utah get used to another horse being corrected and teach him to disregard corrections not meant for him. I’ll be filming follow up videos so you can see how this progresses but I hope this video brings some insight into how I team the horses in the initial stages.
