"What is life? Origin and development” This discussion panel took place in Cracow, Poland and was organized by Fundacja En Arche. The speakers were Douglas Axe – an American molecular biologist who conducts research on the origin of proteins and protein systems; and Brian Miller – an American physicist and researcher of the origin of life. The meeting was hosted by Italian journalist Marco Respinti - member of the International Federation of Journalists, author, editor and translator. *** Event website: czymjestzycie.enarche.pl/en/ The consensus view states that the first life arose about four billion years ago in a mixture of basic chemical compounds (so called “prebiotic soup”), which, as a result of various environmental factors, gave rise to the first building blocks of life - amino acids. Then, purely natural processes - mainly random mutations and natural selection - led to an increase in the complexity of life, and its subsequent forms were constantly subjected to environmental pressure. In this way, a rich landscape of life was created, including us - humans. This is a commonly held view, but is it confirmed by modern natural sciences? This question will be answered by Douglas Axe – an American molecular biologist who conducts research on the origin of proteins and protein systems; and Brian Miller – an American physicist and researcher of the origin of life. During the conference the panelists will also discuss whether the prebiotic soup theory is scientifically credible; can even the simplest organic compounds be created from inorganic materials? What are proteins and why do they play such an important biological role? What is protein folding? Can purely naturalistic processes, such as natural selection, lead to increased complexity and the emergence of new forms of life? Do biological structures in any way resemble products of human engineering?
