The Lal Bagh Palace, Indore The Holkar Dynasty, ruled initially from Indore, then during the rule of Rani Ahilya Bai, the capital was shifted to Maheshwar. During the British rule and the treaties being signed with the British East India Company, the capital was again shifted to Indore. Initially the Holkar Dynasty was staying in Rajwada in Indore. During the period of the 12th Holkar King, Tukojirao Holkar 11, the construction of Lalbagh started. It continued during the time of Shivajirao Holkar. The expansion of the Palace took place till the time of Tukojirao Holkar 111. Lalbagh Palace is spread over 76 acres. It has 45 rooms. It is built in the Italian Renaissance Revival architecture. Its main gates are modelled after those at the Buckingham Palace. The ceilings are painted with greek and biblical themes. The rooms have been beautifully designed with stucco work, wooden panels using indian and European themes.
