India Bets On Nuclear Power To End Pollution India’s Union Cabinet has approved the SHANTI Bill, short for Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India, also known as the Atomic Energy Bill. This new law opens the door for private companies to participate in the country’s nuclear power sector, which until now has been run entirely by the government. The bill replaces older regulations with a single framework, allowing both Indian and foreign firms to take part in activities such as mining nuclear minerals, producing fuel, building equipment, and owning up to 49 percent of nuclear projects. At the same time, the government will continue to control sensitive areas like handling nuclear materials and managing waste. To attract investment, the bill sets clear limits on accident liability, backed by insurance and government support, and establishes an independent safety regulator along with a special court to quickly resolve disputes.
