(27 Feb 1997) English/Nat Tension remains high in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, but there has been no repeat of Wednesday's violent clashes between students and riot police. Police wielding clubs broke up a demonstration to protest the unexplained death of a student leader. Waving branches and shouting "No more police killings," 3,000 students from Kenya Polytechnic marched through the centre of the city for a fourth day. The authorities have promised a full investigation into the student leader's death. An uneasy calm hangs over the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, a day after confrontations between squads of riot police and protesting students. Hundreds of students have filled the streets since the death Sunday of Solomon Muruli, a third-year student who, last year, accused police of kidnapping and torturing him. Student leaders at the University of Nairobi campus at Kikuyu, about 20 kilometres (26 miles) from Nairobi, said Muruli died in an explosion and fire in his dormitory room. The fire gutted the sixth floor of the dormitory. The students said Muruli told them he had received a death threat before he appeared at a police line-up and identified a senior police officer allegedly involved in his kidnapping in November. Students and opposition figures suspect police involvement in the death to prevent Muruli from testifying against officers who allegedly kidnapped him. Muruli was involved in demonstrations last year against alleged police harassment. In December, police shot and killed three university students on two separate campuses. Officials closed Nairobi and Egerton Universities on Monday following rioting Sunday during which students demanded an independent inquiry into Muruli's death. Opposition figures, the independent Kenya Human Rights Commission and other human rights bodies have also demonstrated for an independent inquiry.
