Council Bluffs Historic Haymarket

Council Bluffs' historic Haymarket district holds the largest collection of 1860s, 70s, 80s, and 90s commercial buildings remaining in the city.  The area began after the first of three court houses was built there in 1866 and the arrival of seven railroads to the area. Known as the implement district, it became a bustling hub of manufacturing, warehouses and distribution. Over time its glory faded, which may well be the reason it had been overlooked for development through the latter part of the 20th century, allowing so many original buildings to remain intact today.
