Two different drives from Los Angeles to Kernville. This timelapse shows how each route unfolds in real time from the San Fernando Valley to Downtown Kernville. The top video follows the route through Bakersfield and the Kern River Canyon. Route: 405 → 5 → 99 → 178 Approx 2 hr 35 min. About 143 miles. The bottom video follows the route through the high desert and over Walker Pass. Route: 405 → 5 → 14 → 178 → Sierra Wy Approx 2 hr 52 min. About 161 miles. There are other ways to reach Kernville, including Highway 58 with the Lion’s Trail cutoff and Highway 155 through Glennville. These routes are great options too. This video focuses on two of the fastest and most commonly used paths from the San Fernando Valley. The goal is simple. A clear visual comparison for anyone heading toward the Kern River area, whether it’s for camping, fishing, hiking, or exploring the mountain towns nearby. If you have experience with these routes, feel free to share which one you prefer. If this is your first time seeing the drive, I hope this gives a helpful look at what each route is like from start to finish. This timelapse condenses roughly three hours of driving into one hour. No narration. Just the road and the changing California landscapes.
