2023 MG HS PHEV Review: Affordable Hybrid [Car Obsession] You may think that going green is going to cost the Earth – see what I did there – because let’s face it, cars with electrification aren’t what you’d call cheap. That’s not the case with MG, which proves that you don’t need to break the bank to drive a motor that’s kinder to the environment, and of course, kinder to your wallet. It’s the MG HS PHEV. OK, so the name isn’t very catchy, but the value is. You see, the PHEV version will cost you a little over £31,000. Now for context, that’s almost £7,000 cheaper than the Ford Kuga PHEV, a car I tested towards the end of 2021. Despite its lower price, don’t for a second think that you’ll have as many luxuries as a backpacker’s hostel because it’s got more features than you may expect. The 2023 MG HS PHEV is available in two trim levels, Excite and Exclusive, with respective prices of £31,095 and £33,595. I am showing you the latter in this video, which boasts a healthy amount of options. These include 18" alloys, leather seats, electronically adjustable front seats, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, 10.1" touchscreen, front and rear parking sensors, 360 degree camera, MG Pilot and power tailgate to name a few. The 2023 MG HS PHEV can be driven on EV only for up to 32 miles and features a 16.6kWh battery, which takes 4 hours to charge when using a 7kW charger. The theoretical MPG on a combined run is 155.8, but that is of course taking in to account using the car in EV mode as well. In my experience, though, I was able to get around 34mpg as I did not have the ability to charge the car during the week I had it. Under the bonnet, there is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine which is of course aided by a 90kW electric motor. The car is able to produce 258hp along with 375Nm of torque. 0-60mph is dealt with in a respectable 6.9 seconds, and the top speed is 118mph.
