WHEN THE JAWS MOVE INTO HIGH STREET. Another day in the paradise of Timaru and once again, another piece of Timaru history comes under the jaws of demolition. I can remember from a very, very early age (maybe 9-10yrs old) heading to my favorite model and toy shop which was on the corner of Church and Theodosia St and often use too see some wild looking blokes, with patched backs and the good ol thump of motor cycles. The neighbouring property to Model & Toy Shop, was a little cottage, with a big red corrugated fence and above the tin was a little bit of barbed wire lining the property, this was the base of the "RK"- Road Knights Motorcycle Club, formed back in 1979. One thing as a young kid that always stuck in my mind, as i found it quite funny, one year the RKs got into the spirit of Xmas, by planting a Xmas Tree in the middle of the footpath.... i never did see any pressies dropped under it though🤣 For a number of years they had that property, some wickedly wild partys, a lot of antics but as time moved on development moved in, with a new bridge being built, they moved onto a new property, down on High Street. This was to become the new clubhouse and for many years it stood its ground but over the past few months, it changed hands, then was sold off and as of today, the 10th May 2023, the demolition crew have moved in and flattened the lot, clubhouse, houses and no doubt in time, development will begin. Its a funny thing in New Zealand, for the size of it, it has numerous gangs, has done for many, many years and Timaru was no exception. Some loathed the sight, some loved the sight, many will pin point them to be involved in this or that, but they need to think out of the box and look at other matters in society. Without getting into too much detail, i know in my wild arsed days, i spent many years "off my guts", many times locked up, (for my own safety), but i know one thing, never ever did i get my "mind altering substances shall i call it, from the likes of a club house. Through multiple accidents or smashes, all i had was either prescribed or walked out of a bottle store. And oddly enough, after a number of years of a little havoc, it was from a fantastic night on the grog/gear down at the clubhouse, my days of smashin myself to bits, getting wild and out of control, came after i decided that it was either i give it up, or it was going to give me up and 4 days later, that was it.. I wandered on down the the Alcohol & Drug Centre........... and from that day on (bout 25yrs), have been sane and alcohol/drug free and even though i was off my guts, never did i have any trouble with the lads who were in the clubhouse, if anything, they looked after me. But enough of that, its end of a era for the High Street houses and club house, which was home to many over a number of years and back in March, i was able to take last look around, before days later, the temp fences went up and it was only a matter of time, before demolition crews would move in.
