Luthier Viken Najarian plays “Nihavent Longa” by Kevser Hanim on this oud showcased in Treasures: Legendary Musical Instruments, presented by U.S. Bank. Perhaps unique among the oldest preserved ouds is this early Turkish-style example made by the Armenian brothers Artin and Ohannes Uzunyan, whose reputation as master luthiers was established in Istanbul supplying instruments for the official Ottoman ensembles. Leading Armenian makers like the Uzunyans helped to establish new design standards distinguishing the Turkish oud from the Arabic oud by the 1890s.
