Exploring Victoria's Forests of the Sea

Explore Victoria’s hidden underwater forests to discover a rich world of marine life and what is being done to protect them. Victoria has an incredible variety of marine plants many of which are unique to southern Australia. These marine plants include many large brown algae called kelp that create underwater forests. Underwater kelp forests are important marine habitats and provide food and shelter for a wide range of marine species. Victoria’s kelp forests face many threats including climate change and increasing numbers of kelp munching sea urchins. Too many native sea urchins can destroy kelp forests and replace them with bare reefs called barrens. Parks Victoria and partners including volunteers are working to help monitor and protect kelp forests in marine protected areas. This event was part of the Victoria Nature Festival.
