Find me:   / zenhikingswitzerland   E-Mail: [email protected] This was a really special trip in many ways. I’ve spent a long time researching tiny cabins hidden in the Alps, and this particular one has fascinated me for quite some time. However, since it’s a 10-hour drive from where I live, I wanted to make it count. I finally packed my things and set out in October, knowing I was late in the season. My hope was to experience the Dolomites in solitude, avoiding the crowds that flood the region in summer. But my plan backfired—I was suddenly faced with unexpectedly deep snow. First Attempt: A Harsh but Beautiful Winter Challenge I decided to take the direct route up to Bivacco Guido Lorenzi and reassess from there. Normally, this route consists of a long, steep couloir filled with loose scree. But now, I found myself wading through thigh-deep snow, my heavy backpack pulling me down with every step. It was grueling. Looking back, I now understand why I was completely alone on that climb. That night, the winter bivouac at Guido Lorenzi was something out of a fantasy land—absolute silence, pure solitude, and a dreamlike landscape of snow-covered peaks. The bivouac was surprisingly warm, and with the longer October nights, I allowed myself some well-earned sleep. The next morning was filled with uncertainty. I wanted to push as far as possible along the Via Ferrata Ivano Dibona, hoping to reach Bivacco Buffa di Perrero. But I wasn’t going to take any unnecessary risks—I had never done a via ferrata in winter conditions before, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Since I wanted to stay clipped into the safety cable at all times, I sometimes progressed only 10 meters in 30 minutes, carefully clearing snow as I went. It was slow, exhausting work—but there was something pure about it. Eventually, near Cristallino d'Ampezzo, I realized I had pushed far enough. Continuing would be reckless. I turned back, defeated but hopeful that I would return. Second Attempt: A Completely Different World Just two weeks later, I randomly checked the webcams in Cortina d'Ampezzo—and to my surprise, all the snow was gone. Without hesitation, I checked the forecast, packed my gear, and within hours, I was on my way back. This time, I took a different approach. I started again at Passo Tre Croci, but instead of climbing directly to Lorenzi, I took the usual route up to Vecio del Forame, passing Bivacco Buffa di Perrero on the way to Cristallo di Mezzo. Everything looked completely different. The warm Dolomite rock was glowing in colors I had never seen before—a vibrant, almost desert-like landscape, in stark contrast to the frozen, Arctic world I had encountered two weeks earlier. This time, I reached the cabin with ease. Throughout the evening, more and more alpinists arrived, and by nightfall, we were 14 people crammed into the tiny shelter. Most had to sleep on the floor. The next day i waited for hours to finally have a moment alone in the cabin. After leaving, I continued toward Rifugio Lorenzi, passing WWI relics and the famous cable bridge from the movie Cliffhanger. From there, I climbed to the summit of Cristallo di Mezzo, reaching the top just as the evening sun cast its golden glow over the mountains. I had never felt more alive. I try to capture the serenity and quietness of the mountains as best as I can in my videos. If you enjoy my work, please consider subscribing to my channel.
