SOUNDBITE (English) Paul Mangahas, spectator, entrepreneur who lives between Nevada and the Philippines: "I am going to factor in his previous free solo, alright. He has got the experience and I don't think he would take the challenge if it wasn't calculated. I am pretty sure he has got this. I am confident that Alex has got this." 8. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Queenie Chang, Taiwanese spectator, engineer: "Because I am his fan, and I liked him for a long time. In his previous climb, like the climb at El Captain climb, Greenland, the weather was also unpredictable. So in a situation like this, which is more dangerous, I believe he will make the right judgment. If rain makes it unsafe to climb, postponing it until tomorrow is fine. His safety comes first, and I’ll still come back tomorrow." 9. Wide of Taipei 101 STORYLINE: A planned climb of Taipei 101 by American climber Alex Honnold was called off at the last minute on Saturday morning due to rainy weather. Organizers delayed the professional rock climber's ropeless ascent of the Taipei skyscraper for 24 hours. Honnold's free solo climb of the iconic building in Taiwan's capital city was supposed to broadcast live on Netflix on Saturday local time, or Friday evening for viewers in the U.S. But it was still raining in Taipei less than an hour before the event's scheduled start. Organizers have delayed Honnold’s climb until Sunday morning in Taiwan, where the weather forecast shows sunnier skies. Nearly 100 people gathered around Taipei 101 on Saturday morning to watch the planned climb. Roads near the building were temporarily closed but reopened after organizers decided to delay the event. Paul Mangahas, an entrepreneur who lives between Nevada and the Philippines, flew to Taipei to watch Honnold’s climb. He said he wasn't disappointed, adding "at the end of the day you gotta think about Alex Honnold’s safety of course." Mangahas also said based on Honnold’s previous climbs, that this attempt to climb 101 was carefully calculated. "I’m confident that Alex has got this,” he said. Netflix said in their announcement safety was their top priority. Organizers previously said they were aware of a chance of light rain on the morning of the climb and were prepared to delay the event for Honnold’s safety if weather conditions were bad. The event will air live on Saturday evening in the U.S. at 5 p.m. Pacific or 8 p.m. Eastern.
