In Isaiah 58, God lets us overhear a courtroom-style dispute between Himself and His people. They insist they have fasted, sacrificed, and shown repentance—so why hasn’t God rewarded them? The Lord’s answer cuts to the heart: their worship looks faithful on the outside, but their hearts remain turned inward. They perform religious acts not out of love for God or neighbor, but to appear righteous and serve their own interests. In this Midweek Meditation, Pastor Matt Doebler of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (Norfolk, VA) reflects on how Isaiah’s words prepare us for Lent. Fasting, repentance, and worship are good gifts—but they become dangerous when they turn into performances for our own benefit rather than acts of love for our neighbor. Christ shows us what true righteousness looks like. He comes not to be served, but to serve, to take our sin, and to make us children of light who shine with His mercy in the world. 👉 Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more Midweek Meditations.
