Sonata in F major, Op.4 No. 1 (1790) Maria Hester Park (nee Reynolds) (1760-1813) British Harpsichordist, pianist, composer and teacher, Maria Hester Park, became a popular performer both in private drawing rooms and in public concerts. After her marriage to Thomas Park, (1759-1834) an engraver, antiquarian and poet, she turned her attention to raising their three children and to composing and teaching--both highly successful musical activities for her. She wrote and published a number of works including a collection of keyboard sonatas and a concerto for harpsichord and strings. Haydn, a friend of the family, once wrote her a letter praising her well-crafted sonatas. Today’s piece, the Sonata in F major Op 4. No 1 is charming and inventive. Its classical form and elegant Mozartian style make for delightful listening. It is said that Thomas and Maria enjoyed a happy marriage. After her passing, Thomas composed a poem of remembrance for his beloved wife. The opening line reads: “By skill and science highly was she grac’d / In music’s melting art, and with such taste and touch of feeling did she sounds convey Artist: Nancy Fierro, piano Composer: Maria Hester Park (1775-1822) 0:02 Allegro 2:58 Tempo di Minuetto Piano photo & pastel painting by Nancy Fierro This is a 2025 updated version; edited by kw
