Today’s Piece L’Adieu from Petite Suite 15 Images (1943) Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) French composer, Jacques Ibert was born in Paris and studied at the Conservatoire de Paris where he won the prestigious Prix de Rome the first time he tried. Interestingly, Maurice Ravel (1975-1937) who shared the same cultural world as Ibert, tried 5 times but never won the award. (The conservative jury thought his music too modern). Ibert enjoyed a long, successful career composing numerous works for orchestra, opera, ballet, theater and film as well as chamber music and solo piano pieces. L’Adieu (The Farewell) is a selection from his Petite Suite en 15 Image for piano— a series of vignettes each evoking a particular mood or feeling. The poignant L’Adieu is a tender musical expression of goodbye. Ibert’s music falls into the early twentieth century tradition of French music—a style that moved away from heavy drama toward a sound world of color, atmosphere, elegance and clarity. I am especially fond of the French style which inspires me to create a myriad of pianistic nuances. Video produced by kw
