The No-Input Mixing Board: Three Approaches to Limiting Output Level

Feedback mixing with a no-input mixing board can produce sudden changes in volume that could exceed comfortable listening levels if care is not taken to control the output levels. A great way to keep levels in check is through the use of a limiting device, which creates a maximum level that the mixing board will not exceed. My primary approach to limiting the output levels on my mixing board is using a Zoom H5 recorder, which has a built-in limiter. But I also cover two other approaches to limiting that I've done a bit of experimenting with. Using a secondary mixer to control the final output level can help keep the no-input mixing board from getting too loud. Using a hardware compressor/limiter like the dbx 166XL provides a more complex but very satisfactory solution to limiting the output levels of the device. This video is part of a series on my approach to the no-input mixing board as a standalone instrument. You can watch all the videos in this series here:    • The No-Input Mixing Board: Instrument...   As is always the case with feedback instruments, please be careful to protect your ears and equipment if you're going to try experimenting with the NIMB. Don't plug your headphones or speakers directly into the mixing board, and it's best to use something like a limiter in order to set a maximum possible loudness for the output. 0:00 Some NIMB Sounds 1:03 Introduction 2:10 Zoom H5 2:47 Zoom H5 Settings 4:27 Setting Levels with the H5 4:47 Using a Second Mixer 5:36 Using a Hardware Compressor/Limiter 7:44 Comparing the Three Approaches 8:25 Conclusion I recently released an album of NIMB improvisations and a NIMB sample pack.
