Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs’ Weekly Update TRANSCRIPT: "It’s Friday. Time for another weekly update. Sadly, Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated at a rally in Utah on Wednesday. I met Charlie a couple of times when he was in our area for speaking engagements. Charlie was known for open discourse and debate. He strongly believed in free speech, even speech and perspectives that he didn’t agree with. In fact, I would argue he died exercising the right to free speech. Our nation was built on the idea that we can disagree and debate without resorting to violence. You might not have agreed with Charlie on a lot of things, or anything for that matter, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that all of us have the right to say what we think. It is an incredibly sad day in our country when anyone, ANYONE, is murdered simply for stating their opinion. Charlie, who was 31, leaves behind a wife and two children. This week, I spoke at the annual 9/11 memorial stair climb and spoke to the senior class at Bearden High School. Thank you to the sponsors and participants of that event. I also spoke at the Fountain City Business and Professionals Association monthly meeting, as well as this year’s All4Knox launch, and tossed the coin at last night’s West High School football game. A big thank you to Eugene Wade, who is retiring from Knox County after 40 years of service. Since I’ve been mayor, Eugene has been a fixture at the Procurement Department. Eugene is always in an upbeat mood which tends to be contagious, making everyone around him feel better. I wish Eugene the very best in everything he does in the future. Today in recognition of National Day of Service, my team and I are working on one of the tiny homes for Operation Hero’s Hill. Operation Hero’s Hill will create 20 tiny homes to help veterans who are having a tough time securing housing. Please visit OpertaionHerosHill.com for more information and to find out how you can help. Tomorrow is a big day in college football as the 15th-ranked Vols take on the 6th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Here’s hoping the ‘Dawgs are sent back to Athens with their tails between their legs. Until next Friday, I hope everyone has a great week and GO VOLS!"
