Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs’ Weekly Update TRANSCRIPT: “It’s Friday. Time for another weekly update. Thanks to your generosity during the Holiday Festival of Lights at the Cove at Concord Park, the Knox County Parks and Recreation Department delivered 8 barrels of food and a check for $4,400 to the Love Kitchen. The Love Kitchen, which opened in February 1986, provides meals, clothing, and emergency food packages for the homebound, homeless, and unemployed. We are happy to help support them and will continue next year when we celebrate the 27th annual Holiday Festival of Lights. Again, thank you to everyone who contributed! I’ll be on Inside Tennessee on WBIR Channel 10 this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. to talk about the new stadium, the county’s upcoming budget, and a number of federal issues. Please tune in. Big congratulations to Johnny Kelly from Knoxville who brought home two gold medals and a silver medal in snowboarding from the Special Olympics in Italy. Welcome home to Butch Wilmore, one of the astronauts who had been aboard the Internation Space Station for 9 months. Wilmore is a native Tennessean and a Navy veteran. Originally, Wilmore and fellow astronaut Suni Williams were supposed to be in space for 8 days, but unfortunately, the mission was plagued with mishaps, and those 8 days turned into 286 days until they hopped a ride back to Earth on a SpaceX Crew Dragon. And finally, two Knox County high school baseball players who are sidelined with cancer will be recognized at their team’s games on March 24 and 25. It will be Jaxton King Night on Monday, March 24, at Halls High, when the Red Devils take on Karns at 6 p.m. There will be a rematch of the two teams the following night, Tuesday, March 25, also at 6 p.m. at Karns, where the Beavers’ Hayden Jennings will be recognized. Proceeds from the Playing for a Cure tournament, which is now in its’ 17th year, will go to both athletes. Until next Friday, I hope everyone has a great week!”
