On the night of October 3–4, 1995, 25-year-old Patricia “Patty” Allen was stabbed once in the chest while sleeping on her couch inside her apartment at Glenmoor Green Apartments in Yakima, Washington. The wound was so precise it nearly split her heart in half. There were no defensive injuries and no clear signs of forced entry. And the murder weapon, a serrated kitchen knife from Patty’s own butcher block, was left behind. When her boyfriend Renn Bills returned home from work around 2 a.m., he found Patty unresponsive in the living room. A nearby bedroom window screen had been removed. The rest of the knife set had been tossed over a fence outside. A striped towel, not belonging to Patty, sat near the weapon. Investigators quickly uncovered a complicated web of relationships including a former best friend, Brandi, who some believed wanted to “become” Patty, a rumored love triangle involving Renn, a prior break-in by Patty’s aunt, Patty Raspberry, and her boyfriend Randy Jerred, and a neighbor, Jeff Shaw, who reported hearing voices that night. Years later, new forensic testing identified unknown male DNA on the knife handle. It did not match Patty. It did not match Brandi. But investigators have never publicly confirmed whether it matches anyone else. Nearly 30 years later, Patty Allen’s murder remains unsolved. Former detectives still describe the case as deeply personal, one that has never left them.
