On March 27, 1991, 50-year-old Luther Meshell was found stabbed to death inside his home in Shreveport, Louisiana. His teenage son discovered him lying on the bedroom floor next to his overturned wheelchair. The front door was locked. There were no signs of forced entry. And Luther was wearing only boxer shorts and socks; something his daughter says he would never have answered the door in. Investigators believe Luther likely knew his attacker. Luther, a former arborist who used a wheelchair after a serious work injury, lived alone but remained close with his children, especially his daughter, Tammy Meshell. When Tammy entered the house, she found a chaotic kitchen scene, a severed phone line, and signs that someone had tried to wipe down parts of the floor. Key details that have haunted this case for more than three decades from a bloody palm print recovered from the bedroom to Luther’s missing car later found abandoned at an apartment complex, beer cans inside the home and more Early investigators considered whether Luther’s death could be connected to other unsolved stabbings in the Shreveport area. Others questioned whether someone close to him had motive. But despite interviews, searches, and evidence collection, no one has ever been arrested. Now, more than 30 years later, Shreveport Police Department is reviewing what evidence remains, including bedding and latent prints, for modern DNA testing.
