این غزل مولانا تجلی مفهوم وحدت وجود و عشق الهی است؛ شعری که مرز میان عاشق و معشوق، جوینده و جست‌وجو را از میان برمی‌دارد. مولانا در این اثر می‌گوید عشق نه حرکتی از انسان به‌سوی خدا، بلکه جوششی از خودِ حقیقت در درون انسان است. در نگاه او، جوینده و معشوق هر دو از یک سرچشمه‌اند، و هرچه در عالم هست، جلوه‌ای از همان ذات واحد است. در این جهان‌بینی، تمایز میان کفر و ایمان، خوب و بد، خودی و بی‌خودی، رنگ می‌بازد. هرچه هست، در نهایت از یک گوهر است و باز به همان گوهر بازمی‌گردد. مولانا انسان را دعوت می‌کند تا از عقل حساب‌گر و “دوراندیشی” فاصله بگیرد، زیرا عشق در جایی آغاز می‌شود که محاسبه پایان می‌پذیرد. درویش در این شعر نماد انسانی است که از مالکیت، خودخواهی و تمایز رها شده است؛ کسی که در فقر الهی غرق است و در همان بی‌چیزی به غنای مطلق می‌رسد. در نگاه مولانا، تنها چنین انسانی می‌تواند راز آفرینش را دریابد، زیرا در دل او هنوز جایی برای «من» باقی نمانده است. The “dervish” here represents the one who has shed all ownership and ego, finding infinite richness in divine poverty.
