Inducing labor begins to be a conversation more frequently especially when giving birth in a hospital, but there are many natural ways to attempt to induce as well. Despite many medical providers trying to push inductions and schedule birth, unless there is a medical reason there are many benefits to waiting until your baby is ready. With mounting pressure (or just a baby that doesn't seem to want to come out) there are many methods to try to encourage baby to make his/her entrance into the world. Here are 10 things to try if you or your medical team is trying to induce and you would prefer not to get induced with drugs (pitocin) or ther methods. 1. Take long walks outside - hills, stairs, etc., and avoid treadmills 2. Have lots of Sex - Semen is the most concentrated source of prostaglandins, which is what some induction drugs try to mimic because it helps to thin the cervix. 2-4 hours after sex, prostaglandin concentrations in cervical mucus were 10-15x higher than normal. Women more sexually active during pregnancy were more likely to go into labor at 40 weeks 3. Nipple stimulation - causes release of oxytocin in and oxy stimulates contractions of uterine muscles - this is why when breastfeeding, you get cramps as your uterus is returning to its original size. Aside from using fingers or a mouth, it could be a great opportunity to test our your breast pump and see how it works. 4. Acupuncture and/or massage 5. Foods 5a) Pineapple - Bromelain helps soften the cervix and stimulate the some muscles, which are known to start labour. 5b) Black Cohosh – helps increase production of (and enhance the effect of) oxytocin. Oxytocin causes softening of cervix which can start labor. Make sure it’s not blue or white cohosh. 5c) Dates ( • Will Eating DATES Prepare You for a Better... ) 5e) Unripe Green Papaya – leaves contain an enzyme that acts as prostaglandin and oxytocin and can help start contractions. But as it ripens, the more the enzyme is lost and will not have the same effect 5f) Spicy Foods - Certain spicy foods release capsaicin which can work against the body during labor as it counteracts the natural endorphins that the body produces during labor. May want to avoid if you want to have a natural and pain-free birth 5g) Black Licorice – stimulates the production of prostaglandins. However, consuming too much of this can result in mild diarrhea, which causes mild contractions in the intestines. 5h) Garlic 5i) Cumin tea 5i) Balsamic vinegar (some women take shots of it) - does the work of castor oil without causing nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea 5j) Eggplant – Basil and Oregano 6. Castor oil - Used to induce for centuries, acts as a laxative and often starts labor. Biggest complaint is it causes diarrhea and vomiting in some people, which sucks during labor. Many people consider it a big risk and it's said to cause fetal distress and for the baby to pass meconium (the first bowel movement) before birth. However, most scientific studies do show that using castor oil for induction is a safe option that does not result in a higher prevalence of these complications. https://www.verywellfamily.com/how-to...
