As the video suggests, it really is a little piece of paradise. I’m less than a mile from Unawatuna Beach and a short tuk-tuk ride to anywhere I want to go in this beautiful Indian Ocean beach town. Despite being decimated by the 2004 earthquake and tsunami centered off the coast of Sumatra a thousand miles away, the beach itself—long hailed as among the world’s best—is still magnificent. And for an even more intimate beach experience, visitors can also make their way to Rumassala Hill (home to an iconic Japanese Peace Pagoda) and hike down through a forest preserve to hidden-away Jungle Beach.
