Shaved ice is so refreshing and delicious. It is the perfect summer treat. There are different versions in Asia. Taiwanese have their snow ice, Koreans have their bingsu, Japanese have their kakigori, and of course, there are the classic snow cones. My problem is that it is quite expensive for what it is. Here is an easy hack to make your own shaved ice at home. Recipe This is what you need. A freezable plastic container - milk expands in the freeze so don’t use glass. Milk and corn syrup. Why do we need corn syrup in the milk? Well, it helps to stabilize the milk when frozen, it adds a little bit of flavor to it and makes the milk ice fluffier. The ratio I’m using is 1 - 10. 1 part syrup and 10 parts milk. Mix it together and freeze. After 5 hours, you can take it out. So that your hands don’t get a frostbite get yourself a zip lock bag and pad it with a towel inside. Now you can hold your milk ice. This is where the magic happens. Take out your grater and start grating your ice. Look how fluffy it is! The best part is that you can add whatever toppings you like! I usually add mangoes and condensed milk.
