20250406 The fifth week of Lent [The Thirst] John 7:37-38 Hymn 526 John 7: 37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (NIV) [The Thirst 목마름] Distinguishing between a well-founded belief and a misguided one can be challenging. Many people view belief as the act of adhering to God's laws, akin to donning the attire of a saint. In Christianity however, belief is characterised by a profound thirst for Jesus, often muddled with our material needs and God's spiritual nourishment. When we crave God, we actively seek Jesus, who embodies God's word. The Jewish festival of Sukkot, celebrated as the Feast of Tabernacles in October, commemorates the Israelites’ journey through the desert. During this time, they cried out to God, desperate for water and sustenance. This physical thirst symbolises our spiritual yearning. Our spiritual thirst arises from both suffering and joy and is unrelated to our material desires. It represents our spiritual struggle to reconcile with feelings of guilt, the desire for peace of conscience, assurance of our pilgrimage and aligned with God's path. 1) This spiritual thirst is also deeply connected to the assurance of salvation. As stated in John 7:38, "Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them." We, as believers, are perpetually thirsty, with Jesus within us, continually providing this living water. 2) This concept, though mystical, is profoundly real for us. When a Roman soldier pierced Jesus’ side while He was crucified, blood and water flowed out (John 19:34). This act symbolises Jesus continually offering us living water, as He remains alive within us. Guhyeon Woo —---------------------------- 1)J. C. Ryle, D. May we continually trust in Your guidance and find strength through Your word. In Jesus' name, Amen. #LondonSeoulChurch #Rev_WooGuhyeon #WooGuhyeon #런던서울교회 #우구현목사
