A documentary about daliuzi music (打溜子), also called Tujia zu daliuzi (土家族打溜子) or dajiahuo (打家伙), an exuberant genre of traditional percussion ensemble music of the Tujia ethnic group (Chinese: Tujia Zu, 土家族) of northwestern Hunan province, south-central China, which makes prominent use of virtuosic interlocking cymbal parts. The senior performer featured in this video is Mr. Yang Wenming (杨文明, b. 1946), a native of Miao'ertan Town (苗儿滩镇), Longshan County (龙山县), northwestern Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西土家族苗族自治州), northwestern Hunan province (湖南省) and member of the Tujia ethnic group who holds the status of Representative Inheritor/Transmitter of the Intangible Cultural Heritage item of Tujia zu daliuzi music. He has performed in Poland (in 1987) and in France (in 2016), and has devoted significant efforts to preserving, promoting, and teaching this art form to young people. The following individuals are also featured in this video ● Mr. Tian Longxin (田隆信, b. 1942), who is also a member of the Tujia ethnic group from Longshan County (龙山县), northwestern Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, and who also holds the status of Representative Inheritor/Transmitter of the Intangible Cultural Heritage item of Tujia zu daliuzi music; Tian taught daliuzi music to Mr. Yang Wenming and the two of them now work together to preserve, promote, and teach this art form ● Mr. Li Kaipei (李开沛), an academic official who serves as dean of the Jishou University School of Music and Dance in Jishou (吉首市), Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西土家族苗族自治州), northwestern Hunan province (湖南省) In this video Mr. Yang Wenming also visits the cymbal workshop of Master Song (宋师傅) in Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (恩施土家族苗族自治州), located in the mountainous southwestern corner of Hubei province (湖北省), central China. Probably filmed in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西土家族苗族自治州), northwestern Hunan province (湖南省), south-central China, c. 2020. In 2006 the tradition of daliuzi music of the Tujia ethnic group, centering on Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture (湘西土家族苗族自治州), northwestern Hunan province, south-central China, was included in the First Batch of China's National-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage List (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产名录) by China's Ministry of Culture (中华人民共和国文化部, known since March 2018 as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 中华人民共和国文化和旅游部). The sub-agencies responsible for maintaining these lists, both under the aegis of the aforementioned ministry, are the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage (文化部非物质文化遗产司) and the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center (中国非物质文化遗产保护中心, CICHPC).
